Cruise Ship – Dining

A huge part of the enjoyment of a Viking cruise is the dining. There are several places to eat, and everything is really well-prepared. There are three ‘full service’ restaurants on the lower levels – ‘The Restaurant’, ‘Chef’s Table’, and ‘Manfreddi’s’, and a ‘buffet’ on the upper level – the ‘World Cafe’.

I’ve always hated ‘buffet’ food, but the Viking ‘World Cafe’, which is classified as a buffet, has changed my mind forever. It’s only partially a buffet, because they have cooks on hand to prepare pretty much anything you want (made-to-order eggs at breakfast, a Tuna Steak or RIb-Eye Steak at dinner, or Asian-style noodles, etc) – but you do have to self-serve (though, wine and drinks are served by waiters). It’s always easy to find a table and the food is always being replenished.

Wine and beer are free for everyone at meal times. There’s a basic selection that satisfied our tastes, but you can subscribe to a ‘package’ that gives you virtually unlimited access to cocktails and finer wines all day. We were given such a package as a promotion on one cruise.

These are some of the various food offerings at the World Cafe:

And a few of the more memorable meals

The hardest part of life on the ship is not eating too much! With a virtually endless supply of very appetizing foods, it’s hard not to over-indulge. There is a decent gym on the ship that was never crowded, and I tried to visit that every day. Plus there’s the 1/4 mile walking track on deck 2 that circles the ship.
